Bahrain A chain of 40 natural islands plus 50 artificial ones make up the Kingdom of Bahrain. A chain of islands like this is known as an Archipelago. The archipelago known as Bahrain is off the southwestern coast of the Persian Gulf and is connected to Saudi Arabia by a 16-mile causeway.  Bahrain is an Arabic word meaning "Two Seas.” In this case, it refers to the freshwater springs and the islands’ seas.
