Brenda Brown Passport Scholarship

Description

The Brenda Brown Passport Scholarship awards students the funds to apply for their first U.S. passport!

Our founder Leticia developed this program because she wholeheartedly believes in the benefits of international exchange! And she’s made it her life’s mission to help students discover these benefits for themselves.

The scholarship is named after the influential professor who inspired Leticia's passion for travel and supported her on her study abroad journey, Brenda Brown.

As a Ghana native, Leticia had no experience with how history is taught in the United States. She was in awe of the way that Professor Brown taught with such excitement and credibility. This excitement came from the first-hand insight Professor Brown had into most of the places that she taught about -- she's an avid traveler. She encouraged Leticia to explore the world, and despite some challenges, she helped Leticia make her dream to study abroad come true. Without Professor Brown EBI wouldn't exist.

An all too familiar conversation sparked the development of this scholarship.

After an EBI study abroad presentation, a local D.C. teacher told Leticia about an incident where 20 students got a surprise opportunity to study abroad for the upcoming summer. Unfortunately, none of the students were able to take advantage of the unexpected study abroad trip because none of them could get their passports in time. It was at that moment Leticia decided she had heard this same story one too many times. It was time for her to do something about it!

At EBI, we thrive on doing what we can to help students experience the world!

It is EBI’s mission to pay the kindness that Professor Brown showed our founder forward. That is why we created the Brenda Brown Passport Scholarship!

We want to make sure all students have the option to travel.

EBI awards this scholarship to over 300 recipients by the year 2025; helping over 300 students get their first U.S. passport! Check out our past scholarship winners below.

Description

The EBI City Explorers program introduces students to the world beyond their ordinary jurisdiction.

Around the world Exploration tours engage groups of students or corporate team members to the world beyond their ordinary jurisdiction through interactive virtual travel.

Each lesson has a quote to engage the explorers thinking, including:
  • "We don’t see things as they are, we see them as we are." - Anaïs Nin
  • "Preservation of one’s own culture does not require contempt or disrespect for other cultures." - Cesar Chavez
  • "Cultural differences should not separate us from each other." - Robert Alan
Exploration tours can be offered either in person or virtual. It is a great way to engage your students about beautiful cultures around the world, how different but yet similar to yours. Email EBI if you would like us to host an exploration tour for your students and team either in-person or virtual.

We have found that the two most significant barriers for these students are a lack of funds and a lack of reference.

Many inner-city students come from families that have never traveled. These students don’t know how beneficial travel is! These students may also have a fear of the unknown and lack support from family and peers.

EBI fights to change that narrative for those students, one trip at a time!
