About the Ghana Study Tour: Sankofa Narratives

Embark on the Sankofa Narratives, a transformative 14-day digital storytelling and STEAM-focused journey through Ghana, West Africa. This program offers a unique opportunity to explore the local language, history, and community through group tours, cultural activities, and hands-on volunteer projects. By participating, you will gain a fresh perspective on Africa as a vibrant, cosmopolitan region with a rich history bridging the past to create a brighter future.

The Journey

Your experience begins with virtual pre-departure orientations designed to prepare you for life overseas. These sessions focus on:

Preparation: Setting expectations and understanding life in West Africa.
Digital Storytelling: Learning how to document your journey through our Digital Storytelling Lab, connecting your Baltimore roots to Ghanaian heritage.
The Sankofa Project: Developing a two-part capstone project exploring Ghana both before your departure and after your return.

Professional Outcomes

This tour is an investment in your future. Participants will earn 20 Service Learning Experience (SLE) credits, receive an official Certificate of Completion, and attend workshops on translating international travel into powerful assets for college and career resumes.

Example of Ghana Trip Itinerary

This is just a guide, and it can change based on the circumstance in Ghana upon arrival.

Please know that this itinerary can be changed based on students' survey for improvement and availability of resources. An official itinerary will be emailed to our explorers two to three weeks before departure.

Application Process:

It’s easy! Potential travelers will fill out our application form, including contact information, demographics, passport information, dietary restrictions, allergies (food, pets, or other), and medical conditions that may affect travel. Submit your deposit. Travelers are briefed on traveling conditions, cultural etiquette, embassy information in an emergency, and other necessary travel information.

When is the departure date?

For 2026 we are leaving the United States on July 4th.

Our Maryland students will all depart from DC to Ghana on a direct flight when possible. Participants choosing to fly independently are asked to meet in Ghana on the agreed-upon date. Exceptions will be reviewed on an individual basis.

What is the age requirement?

This program is open to high school and college students.

I am not a student, an educator, or a parent, can I still participate?

Why is there a discount or grant for Baltimore city residents?

At EBI, we strive to secure grants to support our students. Sometimes we are fortunate to obtain unrestricted grants available to all, while other times, we receive location-specific grants. Currently, EBI has been awarded a restricted grant exclusively for Baltimore City residents.

How much is the trip?

What is your policy on refunds?

Refunds are reviewed on a case-by-case basis. If flights and major items are purchased, the chances of a refund are slim. If you anticipate you may not be able to participate, please communicate with us immediately.

In the unlikely event that EBI cancels the trip due to circumstances beyond our control, all fees will be fully refunded.

When is all the program fees due?

All payments much be received on or before two month of program start date.

Can I extend my length of stay in Ghana?

Yes, but you will be responsible for yourself on those days that do not fall on our program dates.
